I don't really need to be targeted- I'm pretty happy with what I've got, and besides, it's more than possible to homebrew anything that is missing out of the games that I'm already playing.

As for the lots of combat, I can understand that much. I used to run 3e as straight combat, but it was always a fairly seat-of-the-pants combat. The only use I've ever had for minis was when I was playing actual wargames. It's probably why the wargames-light nature of 4e doesn't really appeal to me. I've played enough wargames to know that hour long combats are absolutely the last thing I could possiby want out of roleplaying games. They scratch different itches and satisfy different parts of me as a gamer.Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08596442998967851832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2817647623501108348.post-57325203654219453772010-08-04T10:25:28.704-04:002010-08-04T10:25:28.704-04:00Yes, you don't seem to be the target audience ...Yes, you don't seem to be the target audience of this product. I think they are probably targeting the late-2e and 3e players that like a tactical combat system but thought 4e initially went to far.

I definitely understand different tastes. I know a lot of people really like the White Wolf "storyteller" systems, but I have not heard of anything from those games I would like.

I need an RPG with lots of combat. That is the way I played 1e and that is the way I play 4e.FJWhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08875612209350608455noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2817647623501108348.post-52069376583543703432010-08-02T12:05:34.824-04:002010-08-02T12:05:34.824-04:00I prefer Labyrinth Lord these days, although Mazes...I prefer Labyrinth Lord these days, although Mazes and Minotaurs tempts me so, so hard. I also have a pdf of the Rules Cyclopedia that I cull ideas from every now and again, like the Immortals rules, for example.

And I'm glad my blog can provide you with an entertaining read. It's a good question! The more I read about Essentials, the more it seems like the way the 4e was designed to be played, but I don't know if it'll go quite *far enough*. Then again, I may not be the target audience. I guess we'll wait to see when it comes out, right?Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08596442998967851832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2817647623501108348.post-66345170699099704292010-08-01T18:49:15.685-04:002010-08-01T18:49:15.685-04:00I am honored that my question resulted in blog pos...I am honored that my question resulted in blog post from you. :)

Just of of curiosity (and to put your post in context) what version of D&D do you like/play?FJWhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08875612209350608455noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2817647623501108348.post-28898709693026685102010-08-01T11:57:12.493-04:002010-08-01T11:57:12.493-04:00I paid full price for the system sight unseen when...I paid full price for the system sight unseen when it came out, which I think colors my perception of the game. I paid $90 for the game, which is a bit much considering that I ran maybe two sessions and didn't like the way the game played. The combat itself was fine, it was clearly tightly designed, but it just wasn't *fun* in the way lots of other, more loosely designed games are/were.

A 4e version of Spelljammer actually sounds like fun. Maybe I could get some use out of the books then ;)Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08596442998967851832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2817647623501108348.post-29641976251879651782010-07-31T22:29:30.956-04:002010-07-31T22:29:30.956-04:00I have the 4E player's Handbook for which I pa...I have the 4E player's Handbook for which I paid less than $20, after shipping, from an Amazon seller. I have yet to read past the introduction of the book. I did play a 4E skirmish at a convention and there was no melee combat. All the characters have the "encounter powers" so combat is like endless ranged weapon attack. I’m no fan of recent WOTC products but I keep wanting to do something silly, like a homebrew 4E version of Spelljammer. I think 4E is the perfect system for this idea.Chris Creelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15993487911122629839noreply@blogger.com
